DYSLEXIA ASSESSMENTS

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies .. the man who never reads only lives one”. (George R.R. Martin)

What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is also known as a Specific Learning Disorder of Reading. It affects 5-15% of individuals and occurs in both adults and children. Dyslexia is essentially a reading disorder beginning in childhood which makes it difficult for individuals to read fluently and comprehend texts. Dyslexia is not a problem with comprehension.
Dyslexia is a neurological issue that is often inherited and stems from problems in the development of phonological processing. Parents and teachers often notice this difficulty by age seven, when the child is reading slowly with many mistakes.

People with Dyslexia can improve in reading with targeted Early Intervention and additional assistance. Getting help early in a child’s life is extremely important.

Source Psychology can provide complete assessments and detailed reports in order to identify your child’s learning strengths and let you know if they are suffering from a learning disorder such as Dyslexia. Identifying their areas of need and any underlying deficits provides guidance in addressing their weaknesses.
If learning difficulties are identified during the assessment, individuals are often eligible for Special Provisions in exams and additional recognition when applying for University. It is helpful for confidence to highlight this issue to build up motivation to engage in reading.

Diagnosing learning difficulties or disabilities in children: a cognitive assessment in conjunction with an educational assessment can assist in identifying the presence of a learning difficulty or disorder in children and help teachers make appropriate adjustments for students in the classroom.

Intellectual difficulty or disability: an assessment will assist in identifying children with an intellectual disability, which is characterized by an IQ test score at least 2 standard deviations below the mean (this often equates to an IQ score of 70).
